The 8 keys to a product that sells

Every product or service you want to advertise should have these elements on your website:

  1. Headline. What it is, in a few words. "Online MBA with a Specialisation in AI"
  2. Hook. Why I should care, in one line. "Lead the company of the future without leaving your job."
  3. Full description, in two parts:
    • Sales: advantages and benefits for the customer, in other words, what they gain.
    • Technical: features, duration, format, requirements, materials… in other words, what it is.
  4. Price and offer. A clear price and, if there is one, the offer: discount, scholarship, promotion, deadline. A visible price builds trust; without it, customers go looking for it somewhere else.
  5. Images that sell. Photos of the product or service, images with messages, infographics and key facts. Ideally square (1080×1080) or portrait (1080×1350).
  6. Video. Your TV commercial or advertising video, uploaded to YouTube. Recommended length: up to 90 seconds.
  7. Trust. Testimonials, reviews, figures, seals, awards and guarantees. That's what wins over anyone who hesitates.
  8. Point of sale and call to action. A web page, an online shop or a landing page, with one clear button: Buy, Book, Request information, Enrol.

The 5 images that sell

The same order works for any product or service: catch the eye, show, explain, convince and prompt action. The first image decides whether someone clicks; the other four close the sale.

Product example: an iron

  1. Main photo. The iron on its own, on a white or neutral background, well lit and at a three-quarter angle. It's what most online shops ask for and what appears in search results.
  2. In use. Someone ironing a shirt in a real home, with the result in view. It helps customers picture themselves using it.
  3. Benefits infographic. The iron in the centre and 3 or 4 benefits with icons and large text. Benefits ("iron in half the time") work better than loose technical data.
  4. Detail. A close-up of the soleplate, the water tank or the controls, to convey quality and answer questions.
  5. What's included and trust. Box contents, dimensions, years of warranty and, if you have them, the average rating or a seal. A before-and-after also works really well.

Service example: a master's degree

  1. Key image. The master's name, a hook and the qualification on a background with your brand identity. It's the cover of the ad.
  2. Real people. Students and lecturers in class, on campus or in an online session. Real photos beat stock images: they feel genuine and set you apart.
  3. Programme infographic. Duration, format, credits, timetable, language and career prospects. It answers "does this fit into my life?" at a glance.
  4. Trust. Rankings, accreditations, alumni figures and a testimonial with a photo, name and a short quote.
  5. Offer and call to action. Price or scholarship, start date, places and a clear button: "Request information" or "Save your place".

Tips for all five

  • Square (1080×1080) or portrait (1080×1350) format, with the same colours and typography in all of them.
  • Little text, and large, readable on a phone. Price and title also as text on the page, not only inside the image.
  • AI-generated images: fine for backgrounds, settings and infographics. For people representing customers or students, use real photos: presenting invented faces as real customers is misleading.
  • Third-party logos (universities, rankings, partner brands): use them only if the agreement or the seal allows it.
  • Don't promise results you can't prove, such as "guaranteed job" or "irons twice as fast" without evidence.

Help AI (and Google) understand your website

  • One page per product or service, with its own address (for example, yoursite.com/my-product).
  • Important text, written as text. If the headline or the price only appear inside an image, AI and Google can't read them.
  • Describe your images in the alternative text ("alt"): "Customers trying the product in our shop".
  • Price and offer, visible on the page, not only in a PDF or only in the contact form.
  • Video, embedded from YouTube on the same page.
  • If you have a web developer, ask them to add structured data (schema.org Product, Service, Course or Offer). Google and AI read it directly.

A ready-made prompt to review your website with any AI

Copy this into your AI assistant and replace [URL] with your website address. It will review all your products and services in one go:

Act as a digital marketing and advertising expert. Analyse my whole website: [URL]. Go through it from the home page, the menu and the sitemap (sitemap.xml) and list all the products and services I offer, with the address of each one's page. Then review every product or service page against these 8 elements: 1) a clear headline, 2) a hook, 3) a sales description (benefits) and a technical description (features), 4) a visible price and offer, 5) high-quality advertising images with alternative text, 6) a video, 7) trust elements (testimonials, figures, seals), 8) a clear call to action leading to a purchase or contact. Give me: a) a table with one row per product or service and one column per element, marking whether it's there, missing or could be improved; b) the problems repeated across the whole website and how to fix them in one go (for example, in the page template); c) for each product, the exact text you suggest for anything missing or to be improved, starting with the ones that can sell the most. Also check that the key text is real text (not just an image), that each product has its own page, and suggest the appropriate schema.org structured data. If you can't open a page, tell me which ones so I can paste their content.
